About Us

About Us

Our aim is to make all our customers feel happy and relaxed whilst shopping at Buffers. We help them find what they want and hopefully give them ideas and advice to aid them achieve their dreams (within the hobby we mean – we’re not miracle makers!!)

We hold regular monthly workshops (free to all).
We see the shop as part of our extended family, so don’t be surprised, if when after you have had your cup of tea, we put a duster in your hand and get you cleaning, giving advice, or making other customers tea and coffee!

James May Toy Stories.

As you are all probably aware, we have helped and featured, along with many of our customers, in James May Toy Stories and we have now just finished filming with him again for another special spin off from the first series. It was amazing fun and was quite different from the first episode; everyone worked so hard –so take a look at our write up!
We pride ourselves on being different (actually very different) from the majority of Model Railway shops, but don’t take our word for it, come and visit and see for yourself!!
We remain ever faithful to the description James gave us………………………………

Introducing the gang

The Girls

Maria,‘the boss’

Now known to all her regulars as Miss Whiplash, if you want to know why she has this nick-name then you’ll have to visit!!!!

Maria originally started the shop with her partner, Jeff, in 2002. Before that they ran two garages, servicing cars and serving petrol, an unusual job for a lady! Jeff tragically died in 2007 and, after much encouragement from customers and friends, she decided to make a go of it on her own. The shop has evolved over the past few years into what it has become today. It has almost doubled in size, there are over 8000 products, a website, workshops and events, and even a model club that meets fortnightly! Maria is full of ideas and projects, there is always something going on in her head (it’s big enough) and on top of all that, it pains me to say, she does actually know her stuff!

Lynne (Maria’s fat friend!))

Lynne would like it stated that she is not such a fat friend now and is aiming to be a slightly thinner friend soon (yeh right! Says Maria).

Lynne has been friends with Maria for almost 20 years now, someone has to be! They not only work together but live together too! (but not in that way!)

When Jeff died Lynne came to the shop to offer a hand in sorting the place out and is still trying to get back home to her once life of idle leisure (if that is what you call being a single mother of 8!) Lynne has learnt so much in the last few years but unfortunately nothing much of any use!!!!!However she will endeavour to find the answer/item/solution to any of your problems, especially those concerning the model railway industry! So come in and test her out!!

Jack

As many of you can’t have failed to notice Jack is still here!!! Uni will have to wait! The campaign to save him worked – well at least for now…………

We tried bribery and many of the other suggestions you put to us but what really did it was the threat of us (Maria and Lynne) visiting him at Uni on a weekly basis! This he felt he could not subject his fellow students to, also he feared his street cred would be ruined should his dirty little secret of model railways and train spotting be revealed!!

Jack, we love you and are not ready to let you go yet! So, for now, we will keep your dirty little secret between ourselves!

Robert (Mr Chippy)

Ahhh the lovely Roberto! For all your repairs, chipping, decals and technical expertise! Roberto continues to enhance the shop with his presence at least once a month – willing and able to assist in any way he can. He is so hot on the till, after almost 2 years of training can almost complete one transaction in a day! Go Robert Go!

Maria and Lynne have decided that all repairs will now go direct to Robert, this saves time and also enables you the customer to have contact with him to discuss all your problems (Loco related of course!)

Robert can also be seen at most of the local shows, displaying some of our products and also giving help and advice when needed. Robert does need regular feeding (sustenance and brain food he calls it) so if you see him there just chuck him a choccie biscuit as you pass!

And all the rest!

Choppers (Charlie) is our Saturday boy and makes a mean cup of tea/coffee, he is also a whizz with the hoover! He can turn his hand to most things and is usually well behaved (only because he lives with Lynne & Maria and likes to be fed and watered!)

Customers – you all know who you are! Those lovely chaps that give their time freely to come and help us out, we really appreciate all your help and all the cakes and chocolates you bring with you!!!! It wouldn’t be the same without you!
