Bachmann 35-077 Billinton Class E4 0-6-2T BR Unlined Black Early Crest 32556

The Locomotive, Carriage & Wagon Superintendent of the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (LBSCR), Robert Billinton, designed the E4 class of passenger tank engine in 1897. They were a larger version of the earlier Class E3 tank and had five foot driving wheels. 75 were built for the LBSCR between 1897 and 1903 and, although primarily a passenger loco, they were also used on freight trains.

They were initially built with Westinghouse air brakes but, after the Grouping in 1923, the Southern Railway started to replace this system with vacuum brakes. In 1909, four had been rebuilt with bigger boilers as the E4X Class.

All but one came into BR ownership at Nationalisation in 1948 (one was scrapped in 1942 after being damaged by enemy action in Eastbourne shed). With the spread of electrification, they tended to be used on branch lines and as station pilots, most famously at London Waterloo where they were moved the empty coaching stock to and from Clapham Junction. Withdrawals started in 1954 and the last one was withdrawn in 1963.
One has been preserved  No.473, at the Bluebell Railway in Sussex.

This model is in BR lined black with the early crest which would have been applied after Nationalisation in 1948 to c1956 when the late crest started to be used. This particular loco was built as No.556 at Brighton works in August 1901, was renumbered 2556 after the grouping, 32556 after Nationalisation and was withdrawn for scrapping in Oct.1961.
