In September 1911, J.G.Robinson, the CME of the Great Central Railway (GCR), introduced a 2-8-0 heavy freight locomotive – the 8K class (later LNER/BR class O4) – to cope with the increasing coal traffic from the South Yorkshire and East Midlands coalfields. They were an immediate success and, by 1914, six batches totalling 126 locos had been built.
In WW1, the British Army’s Railway Operating Department (ROD) adopted the design for wartime use and a further 521 had been built by 1920 for use both in the UK and in Europe. At the end of the war, most of them were stored or loaned to the GCR, Great Eastern, North Eastern, Great Western, Caledonian and LNWR as well as some being shipped to both China and Australia. Later, they started to be sold off with both the GWR and the LMS buying some but with the bulk of the sales going to the LNER.
Although they went to war again in 1941, when 92 of the LNER locos were withdrawn for use in the Middle East and North Africa, Riddles Austerity class was chosen as the standard military locomotive in WW2. They did, however, continue in use as heavy freight locos in BR days after Nationalisation in 1948 and did not start to be withdrawn until the mid-1950s. The last one was withdrawn in Feb.1966 and one has been preserved as part of the National Collection (a further three have been preserved in Australia).
This loco is in BR unlined black livery with the late crest which would have been applied after c1956.
